We might’ve found the perfect summer treat for the heat at this dessert café: Alley Dessert in JB has the viral crystal “ice jelly” desserts topped with fresh fruits, herbs and floral garnishes starting from just ~$2.50 SGD per bowl!
We’ve been seeing the viral “ice jelly” desserts all over social media: aesthetic bowls of multi-coloured jelly piled with assorted toppings. The dessert is actually a popular street food and summer treat found all over China, and features a special kind of jelly called bingfen, which translates to “ice jelly”. The “ice jelly” is nearly completely clear, with a unique texture unlike any other jellies we’ve tried before—super soft, slightly gooey, and with a subtle chew (but not as chewy as konnyaku).

We ordered a couple of the “ice jelly” dessert bowls to try at Alley Dessert, and each one of them is decorated beautifully, and really aesthetic to look at. Each bowl starts with shaved ice and “ice jelly” as a base, topped with various toppings like fresh fruits, water chestnut pearls, jelly cubes, popping boba, herbs and flower garnishes. You also get assorted syrups like brown sugar, coconut milk and fruit syrup to add to your bowls for additional sweetness.

All the bowls are really refreshing, especially with the addition of fruits, but our favourite has got to be the Lychee Grapes (RM 15) that’s topped with sliced green grapes. The green grapes are super crisp and sweet, and the addition of crunchy water chestnut pearls provide a good balance to the mild-tasting soft jelly—definitely a must-order when you’re here. “Ice jelly” dessert bowls start from an affordable RM8.90 each (~$2.50 SGD each), and the café is located just ~10 minutes away from the checkpoint. If you’re planning a visit here, we recommend coming sometime before 2pm to avoid the post-lunch crowd.
