You’re familiar with the maid café, where you’re waited on hand and foot by Japanese “maids” who will offer the utmost hospitality and service while you dine; but have you ever heard of the tsundere café?

@subatokicafe Here are the highlights of yesterday’s Tsundere Cafe! Do note that these ‘punishments’ were personally requested by our customers, and are not meted out as part of our routine services. :3 #tsunderecafe #subatokicafe #Daijoubusg

If you haven’t heard of the term before, a tsundere describes a character who’s cold, grumpy, and sometimes downright mean, but secretly harbours a soft and kind side as well. Think of the tsundere café as the direct opposite of the maid café: instead of being treated kindly, diners can expect to be scolded, ignored, or even “punished”! Quite like a Japanese version of the viral Karen’s Diner.

If you’re curious to know what goes down in a tsundere café, you’re in luck! Subaoki Café will be having their next Tsundere Café pop-up event here in Singapore for one day only, on 26th August 2023! As a customer of the café, you’ll be issued a Service Gacha Card, where you’ll be entitled to draw for various “experiences” with the tsunderes of the café. Each draw is priced at $2 and includes the likes of forehead flicks, death stares, games, hammer and more.

Basically, you’re paying to be berated, ignored and treated rudely by the staff. If that’s something you’re into, stay tuned to SubaToki’s Instagram for updates on how to book a slot for their upcoming Matsuri-themed tsundere event on 26th August. As it is still a café, there will also be a food and drink menu to order from, courtesy of Daijoubu Café.
