7. Singapore Writers Festival

The Singapore Writer’s Festival is in to its 19th annual edition, spanning over 10 days from 4 to 13 November. This year, it will explore the complex human condition with the theme, Sayang – A Malay word with different meanings, it is used as a term of endearment, or could also refer to pity and a bittersweet sense of lost opportunities. Here are some of our favourite events (amongst many others) that will be happening this weekend.

The Whens and Whys of Sayang is a lecture on the word, ‘sayang’, and will follow its adaptation from the past to present contexts, and how its meaning has changed over time. will be held at The Arts House at The Old Parliament on the 5th.

Another interesting lecture to look forward to, Reinventing Poetry for the Internet Age avant-garde poet Marjorie Perloff will talk about how poetry is not only limited to the written form, exploring other platforms it can be expressed on. It will be held at The Arts House at The Old Parliament on the 6th.

If you prefer film, a screening of Dheepan will be held at The Projector on the 6th. The film tells a powerful and touching story about three Tamil refugees who fled to France to escape the atrocities of war-ravaged Sri Lanka.
