Popular sushi chain, Genki Sushi has collaborated with Japan’s largest snack corporation, Calbee to bring you a fun and exciting new menu featuring Calbee’s potato chips and Jagabee fries!
The Genki Sushi x Calbee menu marries two items that you wouldn’t expect would ever be put together: sushi and chips! Read on to find out what we thought about this unexpected food combo! Highlights from the collaboration menu are various maki topped with Calbee’s “Hot & Spicy” potato chips, sides and even soft serve paired with Jagabee fries.

Out of all the items in the menu, our favourite is probably the maki series, as the kick from the spicy potato chips helped to lift the dish, especially since most of the maki consisted of fried items like the Crispy Ebi Fry Maki ($4.80), Crispy Teriyaki Chicken Maki ($4.80) and a creamy Crispy Lobster Salad Maki ($4.80). Plus, the chips added a new textural element to an otherwise regular sushi dish, making each bite extra crunchy.

Moving onto the sides, these felt considerably greasy to eat, as you have fried items paired with various flavours of Calbee’s Jagabee like Original, Seaweed and Spicy. Each side came with a generous portion of Jagabee fries, so if you love snacking on Jagabee, you’ll definitely love these.

Finally on to dessert: we have various flavours of soft serve paired with Jagabee fries—a fresh take on the controversial fries-with-ice cream combo. While the soft serves were delightful on their own, unfortunately the combination of soft serve with Jagabee fries was not for us. Though we would imagine that fans of the sweet and salty pairing will enjoy the Soft Cream Jagabee ($5.90); especially since the hardy Jagabee fries stay crunchy for much longer and won’t turn soggy even if you leave it in the soft serve for a while.
Final thoughts: the Genki Sushi x Calbee is definitely an interesting concept and worth a try. This menu is definitely one to share between family and friends, and we wouldn’t suggest trying all the items by yourself as it can get really greasy and heavy the more you eat. The Genki Sushi x Calbee is a Singapore-exclusive menu that will be available for a limited time only, from 6th October till 20th November at all Genki Sushi outlets across the island.
