We’ve got exciting news! The popular Original Cake that got us crossing the border and queuing for hours, is now opening their very first Singapore outlet at Westgate Shopping Mall! You can finally get a taste of these highly sought after Castella cakes without having to travel all the way to Johor Bahru. Here comes the best part – they will also be giving out 800 free boxes of Original Flavour Cakes on the day of their opening! Mark your calendars, the store opens on the 23rd of September at 10.30am and it is based on a first come first serve basis.
The cakes come in 3 different flavours: Original ($10, u.p. $11.50), Golden Cheese ($12, u.p. $13.50) and Frozen Chocolate ($15, u.p. $16.50). Baked daily, the Original Cakes prides itself in being exceptionally soft, light and extremely fluffy. For customers that are intending to bring the cakes home to share with their family and friends, it is advised that microwaving it for a little while will help in enhancing the texture of the cakes, as the crust turns slightly crunchy yet still remains very soft on the inside.
In terms of flavour, the Cheese flavoured cake stood out the most. Especially after it was microwaved, the cheese melted slightly and blended in perfectly with the sponge cake base of the cake, and the salty aftertaste paired perfectly with the sweetness from the cake. The crust of the cake is also slightly savoury rather than sweet, adding on to the unique taste of this decadent pastry.
Taste aside, the shop is also meticulous in their serving size and portions, where they often use rulers for an accurate gauge, and each cake can serve up to 8 people! Note that customers are limited to a maximum of 2 cakes per flavour, while stocks last, so do be there early to ensure that you are able to leave with the flavour of your choice.
