Starting out with a simple and earnest ambition to create and share ‘good old-fashioned cake’ with the local community, Plain Vanilla has been around for as long as I can remember and was once the go-to hangout spot for friends and I in secondary school. In a world of mass-produced confections, Plain Vanilla was the breath of fresh bakes we didn’t know we needed.
Revered for their moist red velvet cupcakes topped with vanilla buttercream, apple pound cakes drizzled with caramel, and decadent chocolate brownies, which are warm and fudgie on the inside, the Plain Vanilla experience can be best described as a harmonious myriad of scents, flavours and textures that make us nostalgic for days gone by.
Expanding from humble beginnings at a small take-away spot in Holland Village, Plain Vanilla currently has four established outlets across Singapore in Telok Ayer, Cluny Court, Yong Siak Street, and ION Orchard, with one more set to open up along Neil Road in May 2021.
While still incomplete, the all-new Plain Vanilla along Neil Road occupies one of Singapore’s rich heritage sites with an oddly unified mix of Peranakan, colonial and East-West architectural influences in the streetscapes of low rise buildings and shophouses.
Showcasing a homely warm-wood interior, the all-new Plain Vanilla features a predominantly white and brown colour palate, with an expansive display and cashiering counter. Complete with outdoor seating arrangements designed to mimic miniature wooden cabins or tents, guests are invited to enjoy the fresh air whilst being shaded from Mother Nature’s unpredictable elements.
