NETFLIX’S “HUNGER”-INSPIRED POP-UP RESTAURANT IN BANGKOK IS SPLIT IN HALF: SERVES FINE DINING ON ONE SIDE & STREET FARE ON THE OTHER!

There’s a new pop-up restaurant in Bangkok, and this one has an unusual concept unlike any other we’ve seen before. The pop-up restaurant is inspired by Netflix Thailand’s latest thriller film, ‘Hunger’: with a novel dual “black and white” decor that sees the restaurant space split exactly in the middle, with two starkly contrasting concepts on each side.

Visually, the restaurant is very striking: divided exactly in half, one side features a “fine dining” concept with glossy black and gold hues, proper table settings, chandeliers and plush chairs; while the other half of the restaurant is in white and has a “street-style” vibe, with casual settings, retro knick knacks as decor and simple stools for seats. The clear difference in both sides of the restaurant serve to highlight the key themes of the film itself—the divide between the rich and poor.

This interactive pop-up restaurant helps you to get a tangible sense of the movie, and even if you haven’t watched the film, makes for a unique dining experience. The novel decor is just the start: visitors will even get to enjoy 2 different types of meals at each side of the restaurant, a fine dining meal for THB 350 (~$13.50) and a street-style meal for THB 100 (~$3.80). Each session will last roughly 45 minutes, and diners are entitled to enjoy one dish from each side of the pop-up.

If you’ve yet to catch the film ‘Hunger’, here’s a little spoiler-free synopsis. The thought-provoking film centres around Aoy, a street hawker who gets invited to become a chef at a fine dining restaurant. The film then goes on to reveal several dark and disturbing themes involving the wealthy elite versus the lower-class poor. Soon it’s clear that the film is much more than a commentary on the food industry, but rather reveals some social and political truths about society as well.
