You don’t have to fly all the way to Japan (or wake up at 5am in the morning) to experience a real tuna auction—there’s one right here in Singapore! Popular Japanese restaurant sen-ryo hosts “kaitai” sessions at their restaurants regularly, where you can witness live tuna cutting and even bid for prized parts of the fish too!

Be awed as a massive whole Bluefin tuna weighing over 50kg is cut and dissected by skilled chefs right before your eyes. There will even be a “bidding ceremony”, and guests will be handed individual auction paddles to bid on the tuna. You’ll need to snag a reservation for the tuna cutting event online in order to participate in the auction.

Just like the traditional tuna “auctions” that happen in Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market, you’ll get the chance to bid on and purchase some of the most valuable parts of the tuna, such as the tail, collar, jaw and more. The parts will have a fixed price, so whoever raises their paddle first once the bidding starts will snag the part—fastest fingers first!

Of course, you’ll also be able to enjoy fresh tuna sashimi dishes from sen-ryo’s menu: such as the Hon Maguro Sashimi ($43.80), Maguro Sashimi Trio Don ($32), Maguro Sashimi Platter ($39.80), Otoro Sashimi ($26.80), Chutoro Sashimi ($24.80) and more.

The next tuna cutting session will be held at sen-ryo’s ION Orchard outlet on 28th February and 13th March 2024 at 7.30pm, and reservations can be made here.

Don’t fret if you didn’t manage to score a reservation for the event, as walk-ins to the restaurant are also available, though you’ll only be able to watch the cutting event and auction, not participate. Make sure to stay tuned to sen-ryo’s socials for the latest news on the next tuna cutting and bidding event that’ll be held in future!
