Over the last few months, TikTok might have taken over the internet(or even the world) by storm, However, the success of TikTok came with a tonne of backlash and today, it is announced that the app will be banned from India, along with 58 other Chinese apps.
Since the rise of TikTok, there have been numerous controversies surrounding users’ personal data, including child privacy violations and hacker threats. Therefore, this new ruling from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology aims to protect the nation’s security and sovereignty.
With almost half of India’s population on the TikTok app, the ban would cause a decrease of up to a third of global TikTok users. Although both Apple and Google Play are reviewing the order from the India authorities and have yet to remove the app from the country, it was reported that ByteDance(parent company of TikTok) was losing over USD500,000/day when TikTok was blocked in the country for a week.
