Sneakerheads won’t have to wait any longer, as the popular experiential sneaker exhibition from LA, Sneakertopia, is finally in Singapore! We wrangled a sneak preview to the ultra hyped exhibition ahead of its public opening on 25th February 2023, and we’re here to give you the lowdown on what to expect when you head down!
The exhibition is held at the ArtScience Museum, and features over 100 limited-edition sneakers from some of the most iconic brands, plus some 50 murals, installations, designs and displays about entertainment, sports, art, film and more!
One of the highlights to look out for is a giant model of Adidas’ Superstar that’s the size of a car and made entirely of recycled cardboard materials! The artist collects snack wrappers, cardboard pieces and other memorabilia from her travels and incorporates them into the giant cardboard sneaker for a funky larger-than-life artwork that’s sure to turn heads. The Super Large Superstar is not the only giant artwork in the exhibition—there’s even a colossal skateboard installation too, and a huge 3D sculpture of the Air Jordan 1 that’s made up of deconstructed “floating” pieces and looks different from every angle!
There’s also a hidden money green-themed room inspired by (or a parody of) the iconic Supreme, rebranded as “Frugal” instead. This super IG-worthy room features fake money bills “falling” from the ceiling, as well as an entire bathtub, sink and toilet bowl stuffed with cash.
JJ Lin fans will be stoked to know that the Mandopop superstar has contributed several pieces of art and shoes from his own personal collection! Come gawk at some of JJ Lin’s most beloved sneakers, specially loaned for Sneakertopia, plus exclusive artworks like a hand-painted helmet, a monogrammed Louis Vuitton x Supreme trunk, as well as works by Yayoi Kusama, Banksy and more!
Sneakerheads are sure to have a blast exploring the installations in the exhibition, with tons of coveted and limited-edition sneakers on display, including a set of first-edition Nike Dunks from 1985 in iconic collegiate colours, sneakers handcrafted from the BTS x McDonalds packaging and so much more.
There’s plenty to see for pop culture enthusiasts and art lovers as well: like reimagined posters of classic films that include cheeky sneaker-inspired motifs like E.T., Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Forrest Gump, The Godfather and Back to the Future. The exhibition is murals galore with lots of wall-to-wall artworks and paintings to explore, including one inspired by The Mandalorian, another featuring iconic celebrities and sports legends, and an entire wall of monochrome scribbles, just to name a few.
We won’t spoil the rest of the exhibition and leave you to discover the rest for yourself, but one thing’s for sure—whether you’re a sneakerhead, art enthusiast, or you’re just there for the ’gram, there’s bound to be something for everyone at Sneakertopia! At the end of the exhibition, don’t forget to check out the retail store for some exclusive merchandise like specially designed t-shirts, collectibles, skateboards and more; plus some exclusive sneakers you can try on and purchase too!
