If you’re a fan of prawn noodles, you’re probably familiar with the one served by One Prawn & Co over at their MacPherson outlet (now rebranded as Zhup Zhup). If you already love those prawn noodles, you’ll be glad to hear that One Prawn & Co has just opened a brand new concept, serving much more than just prawn noodles!
The new One Prawn & Co is a fully-fledged restaurant located at New Bahru, and unlike their original concept at MacPherson, this one is much more upscale, with a more extensive seafood-centric menu. Vibe-wise, the space is dimly lit with warm lighting, and the textured concrete walls juxtaposed with plush furnishings in rich purple hues give it a modern-chic yet industrial-esque feel that’s great for intimate dates or casual gatherings alike.
One Prawn & Co serves both lunch and dinner, with dishes starting from $6. For lunch, you can expect a more casual affair, with a larger focus on ramen bowls, small plates and snacks. But these aren’t just your regular ramen, they’re all served with One Prawn & Co’s signature prawn broth, and topped with generous portions of meat or seafood. There’s 3 different options for ramen toppings: Crispy Pork Belly ($26), Smoked Beef Brisket ($35) or Jumbo Tiger Prawn ($35).
Smoked Beef Brisket, $35
Jumbo Tiger Prawn, $35
The ramen broth was undoubtedly the best part of the bowl: it was rich and flavourful thanks to the prawn heads and pork bones boiled for over 20 hours—we totally get the hype for their original prawn noodles. If we had to pick one ramen that was the most unique, it would probably be the Smoked Beef Brisket. It’s topped with a humongous slab of Australian Angus beef that’s been smoked and roasted for 16 hours, making it so pull-apart tender that it just melts with each bite.
Prawn Toast, $16
Crab Croquette, $16
XO Chilli, $14
Parmesan Quinoa Chips, $8
Notable bites from the menu include the Prawn Toast ($16) and Crab Croquette ($16), both of which came with 2 pieces each. They’ve also got unique Asian-influenced dips like XO Chilli ($14) and Assam Hummus ($8), and while we liked the spicy kick of the XO Chilli dip, we would’ve liked it if it came with some complimentary crackers. If you’d like something to actually dip with, you’ll have to order them separately from the menu, like the Parmesan Quinoa Chips ($8) or Sourdough Bread ($10).
Ah Ma’s Cheng Teng, $23
旺旺, $15
Their drinks and cocktails are also pretty interesting, giving a fresh spin on nostalgic flavours. The Ah Ma’s Cheng Teng ($23) is a cocktail that’s served in an actual bowl, just like the traditional cheng teng dessert, and features a rum-filled sphere that you’ll have to pop in order to drink. The 旺旺 ($15) mocktail is a refreshing option and even comes with the iconic Japanese 旺旺 cracker on top so you can munch on and reminisce on those good ol’ childhood days.
If you’re looking for a pocket-friendly and affordable concept similar to One Prawn & Co’s original establishment, this is probably not the place to be, as the new opening is decidedly upscale. Even the ramen bowls for lunch are priced on the higher side—over $30 for a bowl of ramen is definitely a treat. If you’re thinking of splurging anyway at One Prawn & Co, we’d suggest coming for dinner instead, as there’s much more variety, with dishes designed for sharing.
