10. A Tapestry of Sacred Music

A Tapestry of Sacred Music was first launched by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in 2009. The festival offers the rare opportunity for everyone to encounter the beauty of these varied cultural expressions practised by communities all over the world, in a secular setting. Over the past ten years, we have showcased as many as 23 different spiritual traditions, as well as 56 different cultural communities, creating a rich tapestry of some of humanity’s most affecting and powerful musical expressions.

Commemorating the event’s 11th edition, the 2021 Tapestry of Sacred Music will take place from now till 21st April, and provide insight on the dualities of joy and sorrow, darkness and light, good and evil. Showcasing a wide variety of performances from one literally held in darkness in the acoustically resonant Esplanade Concert Hall, to a colourful ritual theatre in the outdoors with gods battling multi-headed serpents, the free-of-charge event presents the works of artists who practise within places of worship not commonly accessible outside of their community, and others who come from further abroad and are torchbearers of their own traditions.
