If you’re up to date, you’ll know that Dalgona Coffee is the Internet’s favourite drink right now. But for those unaware, this mystical-sounding beverage, which went viral on TikTok, is originally from South Korea and is made by whisking instant coffee powder, sugar and hot water 400 times. It’s also what we call a ‘reverse latte’, where steamed milk is replaced by frothed coffee, and coffee is replaced by iced milk.
But non-coffee drinkers don’t have to be left out of this trend either — from milo to matcha, here are five more Dalgona-inspired recipes you can try.
1. Dalgona Milo
Of course an obvious alternative for Dalgona Coffee would be Milo, everyone’s favourite childhood drink and almost a household essential. It’s also a great substitute for hot chocolate which is a little more difficult to make.
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp Milo powder
- 2 tbsp white/brown sugar
- 3 tbsp hot water
- Milk
- Ice (optional if you wish to have it hot)
Steps
- Combine Milo powder, sugar, and hot water into a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy
- Pour the mixture into a glass of milk and ice
- Enjoy!
2. Dalgona Matcha
Matcha lovers can have their cup of Dalgona beverage too; however this one will require additional steps and ingredients such as whisking egg whites.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp matcha powder
- 1 egg white
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 water
- Milk
- Ice
Steps
- Beat the egg white till it starts to froth and get fluffy
- Boil the sugar and water together on low heat. Let it simmer for 5 minutes till it becomes a syrup. Do not stir!
- Drizzle the syrup into the egg white froth and mix till glossy
- Add in matcha powder and mix till matcha is blended and smooth
- Gently place the finished product into half a glass of milk
3. Dalgona Milk Tea
Here’s another Singaporean favourite: milk tea! What’s missing now is just bubble tea pearls.
Ingredients
- A tea bag
- 250g water
- 350g sugar
- 15g baking soda
- Milk
- Ice
Steps
- Bring tea bag, 100g of water and 50g of sugar to a boil till syrup is slightly thickened
- Separately, bring 300g of water and 100g of sugar to a boil
- Once syrup is golden, add 15g of baking soda and stir till syrup is dark brown and coagulated. Transfer into a separate container and let it harden.
- Once hardened, break it into crumbs using a spoon
- Fill a glass with milk
- Pour in the liquid containing the tea bag
- Finish off with the crumbs!
