Chow Tai Seng is a jewellery store that specialises in gold items, but they also offer a novel service for couples/besties—custom hand-braided bracelets woven with strands of actual human hair, and it’s completely free.

These “hair bracelets” are made exactly how you would imagine: strands of hair from you and your partner are snipped off, before being carefully threaded and interwoven with string to create a braided bracelet. While the idea of “hair jewellery” might seem a little creepy, especially in this modern age, the practice actually has ancient roots that date back to the 18th century. The art of incorporating hair into keepsakes and jewellery was popular as a form of remembrance or a symbol of affection.
