FIRST-EVER MUSLIM-OWNED CHEESY “WOK HEI” PASTA COOKED IN ACTUAL CLAYPOTS!

You’ve seen Chinese-style claypot rice, claypot hotpot, claypot chicken and the like—but you’ve probably never seen a Western claypot pasta before. There’s a new muslim-owned stall within the popular indoor food court Lepak One Corner, tucked within a HDB estate in Sengkang, and they sell some of the cheesiest pastas we’ve seen, cooked directly in claypots.

Super Cheesy is Singapore’s first-ever claypot pasta spot, and they make their pasta dishes in actual claypots to give you a unique wok hei aroma that’s signature to many other Chinese claypot dishes. Claypot pastas start from an affordable $6.50 each, with flavours like Black Pepper, Tomato Pomodoro and Creamy Mentaiko, just to name a couple; and all their sauces are made in-house. You can also add toppings like fresh shredded crab meat (+$4), prawn (+$3), duck (+$3) and chicken (+$2).

The linguine pasta, sauce and toppings are cooked within the claypot itself until the sauce has reduced and all the flavours are well combined. Then generous ladles of their homemade cheese sauce is added to the bubbling claypot until it’s ultra creamy and gooey. The cheese sauce is a special blend of nacho cheese, mozzarella cheese and milk.

Thai Tom Yum, $7

Truffle Cream, $8

Golden Salted Egg, $7

We tried 3 different flavours for the Cheesy Claypot Pasta: Thai Tom Yum ($7), Truffle Cream ($8) and Golden Salted Egg ($7). Out of the 3 we had, the winner was definitely the Thai Tom Yum flavour, which we felt was the most balanced with an addictive and spicy kick that we could still taste even through all the cheese. Truffle lovers will probably appreciate the Truffle Cream flavour, with a potent truffle aroma that we could smell as soon as the lid was lifted. The Golden Salted Egg flavour was our least favourite, and we felt that the salted egg flavour was pretty much masked by the cheese. We were a little worried that the dish would be too cheesy and rich, but surprisingly the cheese flavour wasn’t too overwhelming, and is definitely something cheese lovers would enjoy.

Because it’s a claypot, you get to taste the wok hei flavour—something we never imagined experiencing with pasta. But we recommend mixing and digging into the pasta as soon as it arrives at your table, otherwise you’ll end up with burnt bits of pasta at the bottom of the claypot. You can also add on an extra $5.90 to make it a set with a Soup of the Day and your choice of side: Calamari Rings, Chicken Karaage or Mozzarella Sticks.

As for presentation, the claypot pasta is admittedly not the most visually appealing, and it definitely tastes much better than it looks. We’re also told that the dish has actually gotten pretty good reviews from other customers and even residents in the area. Would we travel all the way to Sengkang for this claypot pasta though? Probably not. But if you happen to be in the area and are craving something cheesy and sinful for supper, why not?
