If Stylenanda – one of Korea’s most well-known clothing brands, and Wes Anderson- the famous director known for his pastel vibes, came together to build a hotel The Great Madras would be just that. With its soft-hued pastel rooms and vintage vibes, The Great Madras is an aesthetic heaven with affordable room prices. What’s more, this hotel can also double up as your next portrait shoot location too.
Opened recently in December 2017, The Great Madras is one of Little India’s newest additions and this newly opened boutique hotel is located only a 3 minute walk away from Jalan Besar MRT Station. And the hotel’s interior and exterior reflect a true whimsical retro quality that will make you feel like you are taking a step back in time.
With 35 rooms spanning 3 storeys, you can pick rooms from a more hostel setting to your very own private suite with a pool view. The Great Madras has a total of 8 different types of rooms for you to choose from. Here are some that we checked out:
The Deluxe Hostels
This co-living space comes with king-sized beds, and have sliding doors that can be closed to form your own individual private room. There are also all-female hostels available for all you female solo-travellers out there. And just like most hostels, you do have to share a communal toilet.
The Courtyard room
With a room size of 28 square metres, The Courtyard room is one of the biggest rooms the hotel has to offer. It comes with its own courtyard and balcony so you can enjoy the sweet outdoors in the privacy in your own room. The Courtyard rooms large size is also because it is handicap friendly, so most of the switches and amenities are available at wheelchair height.
The Good room
The Good Room is a small and cosy 9 square metre room with an ensuite bathroom, the perfect size for couples or a small group. The interior is decorated with pastel tiles and a floral wallpaper that stay true to the retro vibes. The Great Madras has certainly paid close attention to every detail because even the cups and telephones pay homage to its theme. While this room may be small, it comes with it’s own personal balcony overlooking the streets of Little India.
The Great suite
One of the best rooms that The Great Madras has to offer is The Great Suite, with only two of such rooms available. With a size of 20 square metres, it comes with its own personal study and our personal favourite the circular bathtub.
The hotel also has bikes available for rent, that you can use to explore Little India. Or if going out isn’t your thing you can chill and hang back at the hotel’s outdoor pool.
Or discover some of the hotel’s various neon lights that decorate their hallways and grab a quick photo session or two.
The Great Mischief
To start your day right, The Great Madras offers a complimentary English breakfast with every room book. Served at The Great Mischief located just below the hotel, from 7 am to 10 am daily.
Besides serving breakfast they also specialize in Catalan delicacies. Enjoy their Spanish tapas in their open concept setting that ties in nicely with the vintage vibes of the hotel. We managed to try out 3 different dishes:
Patatas Bravas Trufadas ($8) Which is a diced and fried potatoes dish, generously seasoned with truffle oil and shaved parmesan cheese, and is served with aioli and salsa brava.
Pollo Al Ajilli ($10) this is not your ordinary fried chicken, the cafe has put their own special touch to this dish by covering the wings in their homemade garlic sauce.
and Bikini Party ($9) for those who want to just grab a quick bite, this dish is perfect for you. Bikini Party is sliced brioche sandwiches with black truffle paste, mozzarella and turkey bacon inside.
The Golden Rule Barber
And you gentlemen out there looking for a quick shave or haircut, located inside The Great Madras is The Golden Rule Barber. Experience the classic barbershop with services like Beard Sculpting ($68) and Hot Towel Shaves($28). Or for a total treatment get pampered with a Full Cut and Wash ($48).
So whether you are backpacking through Asia, or a quick getaway for the weekend, or even a new backdrop for your IG photos, this place has got you covered. And after our visit, we are sure that The Great Madras is worth a visit, so get ready to relive all your pastel dreams and start making your bookings soon!
